As most people would agree, the 20th century contained some of the bloodiest and most gruesome events ever recorded in history. Why do words such as Hiroshima, Rwanda, The Final Solution, A Great Leap Forward, The Great Purge and so many more spark such vivid images of blood, torture and murder in our minds? And despite those horrific images, what is it that causes us humans time and time again to commit such crimes against humanity? Those are the kinds of questions Jonathan Glover, a critically acclaimed ethics philosopher, tries to answer in the book he had spent over ten years writing, Humanity: A Moral History of the 20th Century. They raped women and girls and killed them. They stabbed some women in the vagina and disemboweled others†¦ Pregnant women had their stomachs slashed open and were left to die† (Glover 58). Although for some, the My Lai Massacre may seem less important than the Holocaust, for example, because of the smaller number of deaths, Glover does not see it that way. In his eyes, it does not matter how many deaths there were; just the mere fact that humans have let themselves do such obscene acts to other human beings is what matters. But what is even more important than those past events is how humanity, as a whole, can stop events such as the My Lai Massacre from ever happening again. In 1986, the Seville Statement on Violence was convened by The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Part of this statement says that â€Å"it is scientifically incorrect to say that war or any other violent behavior is genetically programmed into our human nat ure†. Though this may be a widely accepted idea, it is quite obvious that Glover rejects it. The films, for the most part, are based on the series of Resident Evil games developed by Capcom. The films are written and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson. The first Resident Evil film uses elements from the video games Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2. The film’s main character, an amnesiac named Alice, bands together with an alliance of individuals in an attempt to escape from a secret underground facility that at one time was filled with employees but is now overrun with zombies.The following sequels continue to follow Alice and her attempt to bring down the corrupt Umbrella Corporation. To start off, I will say that the original storyline from the Resident evil films were what made me interested in watching them. I am not exactly a zombie buff, however once I listened to my husband and friends recount the first film, I decided to give it a try, and was entranced by the story. Though by the time I reached the third film I began to lose my enthusiasm for the series.This is a series that starts out strong and then dwindles as though the writers are grasping at straws to keep the series going, throwing in random creatures from the games with no explanations of what they are or why they are there, Anderson deviates from the storyline as a whole. One thing I will give Resident Evil props for are the action sequences, once again I refer to the first and second film. In the third film the action seems a bit stuttered and in the forth film, lackluster at best.In Resident Evil: Extinction, the third installment of this series, it has been 5 years since the outbreak and the few people still left topside are traveling caravan-style trying to get to Alaska. This film gave me the feeling of watching Mad Max meets The Birds, with only 2 good action scenes. The forth in the series, Resident Evil: Afterlife may be even more deri vative than its predecessor. With shoddy action sequences and wandering storyline I am amazed it even got through production.In this film, Alice, played by Milla Jovovich, continues on her journey to find survivors and lead them to safety while working to take down the Umbrella Corporation. Having found a new alliance of friends that needed rescuing, they work their way toward what they think is a safe haven. One of the few saving graces of these films is the acting skills of Milla Jovovich. Throughout the series she has definitely shown her amazing acting skills despite the deterioration of the writing.If you are looking for overdone gore, zero tension, and boring action scenes, then look no further than this whole series. However if you are looking for an action packed, plot twisting, edge of your seat type of movie you might want to stop after the first two films. Ralph had noticed that Jack wasn't too happy with him being chief. Ralph being chief infuriates Jack so Ralph gives him the hunters. This is a good idea so as to give something to focus on other than Ralph being the chief. Already Jack is after Ralph because Ralph has the most power. When Ralph was elected chief Jack wasn't too happy. Jack had wanted to be chief because he thought he was better. He said that he was "chapter chorister and head boy. I can sing C sharp. Introduction to Studying French Verbs Most French students are impressed with French verbs. So let’s talk about them, and the terms used to explain how we should  conjugate French verbs. What is the  Verb? A verb indicates an action. It can be physical (to walk, to run, to go), mental (to think, to laugh)  or a condition or a state (to be, to have). A verb is conjugated to agree with (to match) its subject: He does, she has, they were, as opposed to the incorrect he do, she have, they be. What is Person in Grammar? In grammar, person refers to the different pronouns used to conjugate a verb: I, you, he, she, it, we, they. Read more on French  subject pronouns to understand  this concept better. What is Agreement? In French, some words are said to â€Å"agree† with each other. Its the same in English; you add an â€Å"s† to the end of the verb for he / she/ it, as in: She singS. In French, it gets a little more complicated. In French, you have to change some words or parts of words (like the endings of verbs) to match other words related them.  Ã‚   What or Who is the  Subject?   The subject is the person or thing that does the action of the verb.   There is an easy way to find the subject of a sentence. It’s a sacred matrimony which is taken very serious; in every vow it ends with â€Å"Til death do us part†. Unfortunately, in some marriages the vows aren’t taken that sacred. In the two short stories, ‘The Alchemist’s Secret†, and â€Å"Lamb to the Slaughter†, their protagonists took their vows of â€Å"til death do us part† very personal; was willing to do anything to keep their vows.In short story, Lamb to the Slaughter, an old devoted wife, Mary Maloney, waited for her husband, Patrick Maloney, to return home from work as a police officer. He arrives home around the usual time he comes home every night. This night Mary notices that Patrick seems to be out of it and is acting weird, but she just as sumes he’s tired from work. Finally, Patrick exposes his reason for acting so strange. He never states exactly, but it is inferred that he is leaving her for another woman.Mary, still in shock goes to the freezer to get a leg of lamb to cook for dinner. She continues to go in as if her husband didn’t just reveal to her that he is leaving. Patrick screams to Mary not to make dinner and she snaps. She hit him in the back of his head with the frozen lamb. Mary intentionally kills her husband. She feels as though if she can’t have her husband then no one can. In addition, in the short story, The Alchemist’s Secret, a bitter married man comes into a gas lit herb shop where he thinks it’s going to be a solution to all of his problems.He hears of the famous Doctor Maximus who could make him no longer married to his cheating wife. In the herb shop Doctor puts some type of chemicals in whatever is desired of the customer to kill someone instantly with no di scovery of the death in the autopsy. He wants his wife dead before he sees her fall in love with another man. He states with his face looking tight and dangerous, â€Å"I am not a man to be made a fool of†. The visitor of the herb shop feels like his wife is making a fool of him and she deserves severe punishment.The two stories had many similarities and differences. One of the major similarities in the stories was how Mary Maloney and the anonymous visitor both took the same actions after finding out of the infidelity in their marriage. The differences in the story were the character’s outlook on the death of their spouse. For example, in The Alchemist, during the talk with the Doctor, the visitor says, â€Å"No thank you†, but says it nervously. The nervousness in his voice proved he had some fear and guilt of what he had planned on doing to his wife.In addition, in Lamb to the Slaughter, after Mary Maloney killed her husband, Patrick Maloney and creating a li e to the detectives, she sits, â€Å"{in the other room and began to giggle}†. Mary Maloney giggling after killing her own husband reveals she has no regrets. In conclusion, the two short stories have similar concepts, but have different style of writing. Both couples had infidelity in their marriage and wanted revenge for their vows being broken.
